Special Initiatives

⦁ Sustainability of the environment: We ensure that all our activities are undertaken in a sustainable manner to protect the environment.

⦁ To collaborate with strategic partners in training smallholders and Hans Nef staff in Good Agronomic Practices (GAP) and Good Handling Practices (GHP).

⦁ Since cocoa production is considered highly volatile and is dependent on a number of factors such as climatic conditions, urbanization, diseases, pests and deforestation, Hans Nef is proactively leveraging resources by engaging in risk mitigation strategies through collaborating with initiatives such as Cocoa Action. These efforts will increase Hans Nef’s ability to consistently maintain its revenue and operating profit growth. According to Ghana Cocoa Board, Ghana loses 25% of its annual national produce due to the black pod disease. To encounter these threats to production, the Hans Nef team has assigned staff to lead effortlessly, to replace and rehabilitate affected areas as well as ensuring that our farmers are practicing proper integrated pest management as proactive measure to increase yield.

Hans Nef will partner with multinationals who are key stakeholders in the cocoa value chain which supports the International Cocoa Initiative to improve the quality of life of the smallholders. For example, the Nestle Cocoa Plan aims at increasing its supplier’s profitability, securing high quality cocoa for its business and addressing supply chain issues such as child labour, gender inequality and poor social conditions. By participating in the plan, Hans Nef provides access to its smallholders to receive stronger plants, training of our farmers in better agricultural practices, support women farmers and improve access to education for children through its accredited cocoa merchants. By participating in such programs, Hans Nef builds a more resilient value chain of farmers and increases its own long-term profitability. Hans Nef strategic plan calls for our connecting and involving our farmers, especially women to adopt alternative sources of livelihood such as soap making, bee keeping and mushroom production in addition to cultivate other crops aside cocoa. Hans Nef will provide the farmers with Sustainable Management Services (SMS) through which we build the capacity of farmers to regard farming as a business. Under the SMS, the farmers, drawn from 100 societies are provided training on prudent savings and banking, as well as how to draw an effective balance sheet between their expenditure during a particular season and their earnings in that season.
